Episode 108 (Epilogue): Kids and Art

Tonight’s show discussed children and art. Involvement in the arts has shown to have positive implications for children, such as increased ability in math, reading, and critical thinking, as well as better cognitive ability and verbal skill. Tamara Teeter Knapp and Bonnie Wilson came in to talk about creating art with children as well as how children can interact with the art of others.

Tamara Teeter Knapp is an arts educator and expressive arts facilitator, and in 2007 joined with three women to form Expressive Arts Florida. With us, she discussed the individual benefits of children creating their own art, ways to inspire kids to interact with art, how often kids should have the opportunity to create their own art, how to incorporate art into every kid’s home, basic essential materials, art with kids resources, and the benefits of art classes. Specifically, Tamara teaches local classes in the Waldorf style. Waldorf style integrates art into all aspects of the child’s curriculum and espouses the belief that everything is beautiful, influencing the feeling and moral education of the child.  If you would like to find out more about her program or these classes, you can visit www.expressiveartsflorida.com

Bonnie Wilson is the Scholastic Programs Coordinator at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, where she oversees the museum’s school-related programming. With Bonnie we discussed how children can interact with the art of others, specifically with regard to the Ringling museum and the many ways they make art accessible, fun, and exciting to kids. Furthermore, Bonnie discussed with us how to teach kids museum manners, how parents can get their children to think critically about art, and ways parents can explore art with their kids outside the museum. The Ringling museum is open 7 days a week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and until 8:00 pm on Thursdays. To learn more about the Ringling museum, you can visit www.ringling.org To call for general information, you can call 941-359-5700.

Episode 82 (Epilogue): Tandem Nursing

Tandem Nursing refers to a mom who nurses multiple babies or children at the same time. Sometimes these children are the same age, such as twins, but sometimes these individuals are different ages, such as siblings. Cheryl, and tandem nurser herself, and Carmela discussed tandem nursing, with a focus on nursing siblings of different ages. They started by noting that each tandem nursing mother is different, just as their individual nursing relationship with each child is different

Our guest tonight was Jeanie DeLa. Jeanie is a parenting enthusiast, Certified Lactation Counselor, Certified Childbirth Educator, Car Seat Safety Technician, Infant Mental Health Specialist, and Licensed Mental Health Counselor. But her greatest achievement is being mother to Justin age 11 and fraternal twins Jason and Jamie age 8. Jeanie tandem nursed her twins, and walked us through some of the struggles she had when she first started nursing, and how she came through this difficult time to a successful tandem nursing experience. Jeanie and Cheryl discussed concerns that individuals may have about milk supply, and assured listeners that bodies can make enough milk to nurse multiple children.  The also stressed the importance of reaching out for help if individuals are struggling with nursing.  Jeanie also dispelled the myth that women cannot nurse when they’re pregnant, and noted that for the vast majority of individuals, nursing during pregnancy is safe.  We also discussed shifts in breast milk during pregnancy and after birth, and what this means for tandem nursing.

Cheryl then moved to a discussion of some of the potential frustrations that can be associated with tandem nursing, in particular a need for space that mothers may feel when nursing both a baby and a toddler. Jeanie suggested some steps to take in order to develop new nursing patterns with the older child to best meet the needs of everyone involved.  Cheryl and Jeanie also discussed “momma guilt” in nursing relationship, and how mothers can best manage by paying particular attention to the specific needs of each child, instead of just general ideas of what being the “best” mother is.

Next, Carmela and Jeanie discussed potential for germ and illness sharing in tandem nursing household, focusing on the fact that breast milk is a good boost for the immune system. Finally, Jeanie discussed how individuals with chronic low supply can best attempt tandem nursing, focusing in particular on releasing guilt associated with supplementation and cherishing beautiful breastfeeding moments that do happen as more than just filling bellies. We closed our show tonight with some listener statements on tandem nursing.

Episode 54 (Epilogue): How to Become a Midwife

The focus of tonight’s show was how to become a midwife. We focused on the three main categories of midwives: Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM,) Licensed Midwife (LM,) and Certified Professional Midwife (CPM.) We also noted, however, that there are other midwives as well, and that historically speaking people have practiced midwifery long before schooling or licensing.

Our first guest was Suzan Ulrich, who talked to us about Certified Nurse Midwives. CNM’s are midwives who function as primary health care providers for relatively healthy women having low risk births. In most states, CNM’s are required to possess a minimum of a graduate degree, and are also required to have an active Registered Nursing license. Dr. Ulrich, who is currently the Associate Dean of Midwifery and Women’s Health at Frontier Nursing University talked to us about the qualifications of a CNM, as well as the distance education program at Frontier. She noted that it usually takes around 6 years of education to become a CNM, and that CNM’s having training both as nurses and as midwives, stating that this gives them the foundation to provide total care. She noted that because of this, CNM’s often offer services which many may not associate with midwives, such as regular gynecological exams and also menopausal support and care. She also discussed the major role that hospital guidelines have in a CNM’s ability to practice medicine within a hospital setting, and state issues such as Florida’s requirement that CNM’s have 1 million to 3 million dollar malpractice insurance while other birthing care providers, including OB’s, are not required to have this.
Our next guest was Justine Clegg, who talked to u about Licensed Midwifes (LM’s.) A Licensed Midwife is a midwife who is licensed to practice in a particular jurisdiction (usually a state or province.) Justine, who is a LM, as well as a Mental Health Counselor and Certified Lactation Counselor, as well as the founding board member of the Midwifery Education Council, discussed the requirements for entering into an LM program in Florida, namely 3 college level math and English courses, note that the typical length of time it takes for an individual to complete an LM program is about 3 years, and talked to us about licensure and the legality of midwife practices across states. She also left us with this truly insightful quote about becoming a midwife: “It has to be the right time for you, for your family, for your children, for your partner, and for the rest of your life.”

Next we talked to Kristen Schuchmann. Kristen, a Certified Professional Midwife herself, talked to us about CPM certification. A Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) is a knowledgeable, skilled and professional independent midwifery practitioner who has met the standards for certification set by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and is qualified to provide the Midwives Model of Care. The CPM is the only midwifery credential that requires knowledge about and experience in out-of-hospital settings. Christen talked mainly about the international school of midwifery that she is a part of, Charis Childbirth, and the important care that they give to women internationally, particularly in third world countries.

Finally, we talked to four student midwives: Haddie Katz, Catherine Bressington, Lizzie Norton, and Katherine Jackson. Haddie attends the Florida School of Traditional Midwifery, and is apprenticing with Sarasota’s own Birthways Family Birth Center, while Catherine, Lizzie, and Katherine joined us in studio, coming all the way from University of the West of England in Bristol. Each of these individual shared their own reasons for becoming a midwife, and Catherine, Lizzie, and Katherine talked to us a little about the differences between UK and US midwife certification.
