Focus on Florida: Preventing Violence in our Schools

February 11, 2013 (Sarasota, FL) – WSLR-LP 96.5, Sarasota’s community radio station is reaching out to engage the community in a series of conversations on issues facing Florida.  Conversations take place from 6-8pm at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center (525 Kumquat Court in Sarasota) on the last Thursday of each month from February through April.

On February 28 at 6pm, the conversation will focus on Preventing  Violence in our Schools, and will be moderated by the hosts of WSLR’s Maternally Yours, Sarasota’s Conversation About Pregnancy, Childbirth and Early Motherhood.  This Community Conversation is co-sponsored by the Sarasota Chapter of the NAACP, the Sarasota News Leader, and the ACLU of Sarasota/Manatee. Joining us for the conversation are Monica L. Cherry, Bernadette DiPino, Dr. Laura Kingsley, and Heart Phoenix. Monica L. Cherry is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor specializing in individual therapy for children, adolescents and adults.  Bernadette DiPino is the new Chief of Police for the City of Sarasota. Dr. Laura Kingsley is the Principal of Fruitville Elementary School. Heart Phoenix is Board President of the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding, founded in her son’s honor.

The first hour will be a fairly structured conversation between the moderators and panelists. This hour will be broadcast live on WSLR 96.5 at 6pm (also available via live stream at www.wslr.org).  At 7pm the audience will be invited to share their insights and join the conversation with the featured guests.  On March 28 the Forum will focus on Election Reform, and the topic on April 25 will be Health Care.
