Episode 188: Secondary Infertility (Epilogue)

Birth in the News:
Lack of oxygen prime suspect in infant deaths
The infant gut microbiome: New studies on its origins and how it's knocked out of balance

Join the May 28 International Day of Action for Women's Health Campaign!

Tonight's topic was secondary infertility, which RESOLVE defines as the inability to become pregnant, or to carry a pregnancy to term, following the birth of one or more biological children. Dana was joined by Barbara Collura, who joined RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association in September 2004 as the Director, Chapter & Constituent Services. In April 2007, Barbara was named Chief Staff Officer of RESOLVE. As President/CEO, she represents RESOLVE at a number of national conferences, committees and organizations including the National Committee on the Oversight of Assisted Reproductive Technologies, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, and the National Health Council. As the official spokesperson for RESOLVE, Barbara speaks at conferences and events on a variety of topics related to infertility. Barbara is passionate about RESOLVE's mission as the organization was a source of support and information during her own battle with infertility. Barbara gave us some insight into secondary infertility, and how it affects mothers both physically and emotionally.

Next up we spoke to Amy Wruble, a parenting writer who contributes regularly to Lifetime Moms, Mom.me, Momtastic and The Huffington Post. She also blogs at CarriageBeforeMarriage.com, where she wrote about her struggle with secondary infertility. She is now the mother of two daughters, a 4-year-old and a newborn. Amy told us a bit about her experience with secondary infertility and ways that she overcame the physical and emotional effects of the experience.

Episode 186: Thinking Globally, Acting Locally (Epilogue)

Birth In The News:
New Zealand woman drinks her breast milk for survival
Antidepressant use may not be linked to birth defects
Midwife Robin Lim responds to Nepal earthquake

A recent report from Save the Children called The State of the World’s Mothers 2015 which ranks the United States at No. 33 of 179 surveyed countries, down two spots from last year, and says it is the worst country among developed nations. According to the report, a woman in the United States faces a one in 1,800 risk of maternal death and is more than 10 times as likely to die from a cause related to pregnancy than a woman in Belarus, Poland and Austria.

In light of this study, Dana and Ryan welcomed Dr. Washington Hill to the show. Prior to his work in Rwanda teaching obstetric and nursing students, Dr. Hill served as President and Chief of the Medical Staff at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, as well as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Medical Director of Labor and Delivery. He was also an active member of the Healthy Start Coalition Volunteer Executive Board, championing the important role that Healthy Start plays in providing a strong continuum of care for pregnant women, babies, and families in Sarasota County. Dr. Hill spoke to us about his work in Rwanda and offered some insight into global and local solutions in maternal and infant health.

Next up, we spoke to Healthy Start Coalition of Sarasota County Executive Director Shon Ewens and Marketing and Grants Coordinator Ciera Coleman about the second annual Giving Sarasota a Healthy Start luncheon. This year’s theme was “Thinking Globally, Acting Locally”. Dr. Hill was the keynote speaker of the event.

Episode 185: Grab Bag (Epilogue)

Birth in the News:
Woman delivers baby while brain-dead
US rated below other developed nations in maternal health
Breastfeeding may change breast cancer risk

Tonight, Ryan eased back into the Maternally Yours fold with a grab bag of topics for this show. Dana and Ryan were joined by WSLR's youngest and cutest co-host, Arber.

The Maternally Yours gang has been up to a whole lot this month! WSLR's spring membership drive was hugely successful and we thank our listeners, supporters, and guests for showing their support. Mom Prom, sponsored by the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN), was a an amazing night of fun and frivolity for moms! The event raised over $2000 and recruited 11 new members of ICAN.

In international baby news, the newest UK royal was born last Saturday. Ryan called up Midwife and Honorary Maternally Yours Across the Pond Correspondent Lizzie Norton to chat about the Royal Baby and midwifery in Europe and the UK. Speaking of midwifes across the pond, May 5th was International Day of the Midwife! IDM has been observed since 1991 and is organized by the International Confederation of Midwives to raise awareness of the important job midwives do and the care they provide in your community. The International Confederation of Midwives reminds us that this year the International Day of the Midwife is more important than ever before: as the United Nations Millennium Development Goals come to an end in September, this is the last chance to shine a spotlight on midwifery before the world enters into a new era.

One of our favorite international midwives, Robin Lim, is on her way from the BirthKeepers Summit in the US to Nepal to assist with the tens and thousands of pregnant women who have been left homeless from last month’s earthquake.. She and the team from Bumi Sehat, will be building birth tents, assessing prenatal care and delivering babies in the disaster zone.

Next, we were joined by Mary Ellen Mancini, Director of Development for Safe Place Rape Crisis Center in Sarasota who told us how we can help moms in our community by supporting SPARCC's 2015 Mother's Day Initiative. This opportunity provides a unique way to honor your mom, or someone special, with an offering that continues the cycle of heartfelt giving to mothers and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault all throughout our community.

Joining us by phone to discuss a way to bring social justice action into your Mother’s Day celebration was Sachi Feris, a blogger at raceconscious.org a resource for parents to talk about race with young children. Sachi partnered with Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) to create a Mother’s Day Action Toolkit that includes suggestions and talking points we can ask our children as we take action for racial justice on Mother’s Day.
