Episode 180: Hot Mamas (Epilogue)

Tonight Dana welcomed guest co-host Abby Weingarten. Abby is a freelance journalist, feminist, BDB fan, wife, and mother to the totally rad Miranda (age 5).

Birth in the News:
To delve deeper into this story, we called up trusted correspondent Farah Diaz-Tello. Farah is senior staff attorney with National Advocates for Pregnant Women. She is a graduate of the City University of New York School of Law where she was a Haywood Burns Fellow in Civil and Human Rights, and focused on international women's human rights and reproductive justice.
Farah gave us insight into the complexities of this case, considering that abortion is legal in the United States. In an article she wrote for rhrealitycheck.org, Diaz-Tello said,
"When pregnant women’s rights—to privacy, to medical care, to abortion—are under attack, any woman who experiences a loss, even at the earliest weeks in pregnancy, could become a murderer in the eyes of the law.”

For tonight's episode "Hot Mamas," Abby and Dana were joined by two mamas from Black Diamond Burlesque, Laura Daniel Gale and performer Cherry Von Topp. Laura Daniel Gale is owner and producer of this troupe, which has been performing to sold-out audiences since they first hit the stage in 2010. She is also mother to a 20-year-old son. Cherry Von Topp is mother to three fabulous kids ages 5, 7, and 8. We talked about one word that may not be used often to refer to motherhood: "sexy." These mothers talked about how to still feel sexy after pregnancy, and how to balance certain "ideals" of motherhood with personal confidence. Being a positive role model for your children does not have to be mutually exclusive from feeling like a hot mama!

Episode 180: Hot Mamas

Join the conversation on Tuesday, March 31st when we'll talk about what it's like to be a mother and also be sexy on our Hot Mamas episode. We'll also explore cultural ideas about whether mothers are "allowed" to be sexy, what it means to be a "role model," and how to gain body confidence. Have a question for our hosts or guests? Please email us or post to our Facebook page.

Tune into WSLR 96.5 LPFM or listen live online at www.wslr.org on Tuesday, March 31sr at 6:00 p.m. ET. The program will also available later in the evening via podcast on iTunes or at maternallyyoursradio.com.

Episode 179: Homebirth Cesarean (Epilogue)

Tonight Dana was joined by former Maternally Yours co-host Cheryl Kindred of Maiden to Mother and author Courtney Jarecki. Jarecki has worked as a full spectrum doula, childbirth educator, and homebirth midwifery apprentice before giving birth to her daughter. In recovering from her 3-day home labor, hospital transport, and cesarean, she soon began creating a new model of understanding for planned out-of-hospital births that end in cesareans, now known as homebirth cesareans (HBC), a term she coined. Courtney is the author of 2 books about the homebirth cesarean experience. The main book is titled Homebirth Cesarean and the 2nd is a workbook for cesarean mothers titled Healing From a Homebirth Cesarean. She is also the co-founder and executive director of Homebirth Cesarean International, a nonprofit that promotes awareness and support around planned out-of-hospital births that end in cesareans.

Jarecki wrote these books after experiencing an HBC and examining the gap in care for homebirth cesareans, even though they happen in 5 to 15 percent of homebirthers. Unplanned cesareans are physically and emotionally demanding for all mothers, but Jarecki explains how unplanned cesareans for homebirthers are even more traumatic. She also gave some advice to women who may be recovering form a HBC, as well as helped to illuminate the role of the family, doula, and midwife in a homebirth cesarean situation.

Karraa shared her experience with postpartum depression and explained her reasoning for writing the book. Her book follows the stories of women before, during, and after postpartum depression. As founder of Stigmama, Karraa speaks openly and passionately about her experience with mental illness. She advocates for reclassifying PPD as a trauma, in order to change the way it is treated.
